May 19,2009 - There has been a wealth of strategy RPG’s released on the Nintendo DS both by Nintendo and various third party publishers, but aside from games that set the standard like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, no game has truly stood out.  Atlus is one of the publishers that keep pushing out JRPG after JRPG, and they’re giving it another shot with Knights of the Nightmare.  From what we’ve played so far, the game definitely has some potential.

The demo released to the public hardly explained much, but it did provide the game’s entire tutorial.  In the most basic sense, Knights of the Nightmare is a strategy RPG, but a few twists and turns keep the player involved.

Unlike your traditional isometric strategy RPG, players don’t really have control of their “units” in battle.  Instead, players are in control of a wisp that can control various aspects in battle.  All of the gameplay is done using the stylus and touch screen, while your movements directly coincide with the action on the top screen.  To attack, you simply have to move the wisp on top of your unit, hold the stylus on that area of the screen for a bit, and then release.  The units will move at will.

When defeating enemies, a bunch of crystals will pop out of the vanquished enemies, which you then have to gather simply by hovering over them.  Crystals increase the MP gauge, which is used for more powerful magic spells that will definitely be a key factor in core gameplay.

The most interesting feature we found in the demo was the ability to change phases.  By drawing a circle on a certain crest on the right-hand side of the screen, you can change battle phases, which in turn affect which direction your particular unit is targeting for attack.

The demo ended in about seven or so lessons, and it was really unfortunate because this preview is only a taste of what to expect.  Everything may seem complicated now, but rest assured—we here at Gamer 2.0 are just as confused as you are.  We’ll have more on this game as it becomes available.
